Dear Parishioners,

You have noticed in the bulletin over the last several weeks an announcement about the Archdiocesan Eucharistic Congress that was held this past Saturday, August 13. This event is the first of a series of initiatives that will unfold over the next several years as part of a National Eucharistic Revival. This Revival began last June 19 on the Solemnity of Corpus Christi and will conclude on Pentecost in 2025. During this time, our bishops are inviting us to reflect more deeply on the amazing treasure of the Holy Eucharist, on this divine Gift to us. The website of the Conference of Bishops notes:

Our world is hurting. We all need healing, yet many of us are separated from the very source of our strength. Jesus Christ invites us to return to the source and summit of our faith: his Real Presence in the Eucharist. The National Eucharistic Revival is a movement to restore understanding and devotion to this great mystery here in the United States.

On the website for this Eucharistic Revival (English version https://www.eucharisticrevival.org/ and Spanish version https://es.eucharisticrevival.org/) you will find a brief video and you can sign up for a free weekly “Heart of the Revival Newsletter.” The website has other information and further materials will be included in the coming months.

The Mystery of the Sacred Eucharist is indeed an awesome one. As St. Thomas Aquinas reflected, “The noblest sacrament, consequently, is that wherein His Body is really present. The Eucharist crowns all the other sacraments” (Disputations concerning Truth, 27, 4.). As Thomas emphasized, in the Eucharist, our Lord Jesus is truly present among us, Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity. This conviction has been at the core of our Catholic identity from the Last Supper onwards. In the fourth century, St. Cyril of Alexandria reflected:

The bread and wine of the Eucharist before the invocation of the holy and adorable Trinity were simple bread and wine, while after the invocation the bread becomes the Body of Christ, and the wine the Blood of Christ. (Catechetical Discourses, 19, 7)

It is so easy to take this Gift of Christ’s Real Presence among us for granted. With Catholics all around our country, let us pray for a renewed appreciation of this treasure. How blessed we are that Christ’s love for us is so great that He gives us His Very Self!

Jesus, who inaugurated the Eucharist at the Last Supper, may we always cherish this Gift of your very Self. Holy Mary, whose womb was the first tabernacle, pray for a renewal of our faith in the great Sacrifice in which your Son’s Blood was poured out for our redemption!

Han notado en el boletín durante las últimas semanas un anuncio sobre el Congreso Eucarístico Arquidiocesano que se llevó a cabo el pasado sábado 13 de agosto. Este evento es el primero de una serie de iniciativas que se desarrollarán en los próximos años como parte de un Avivamiento Eucarístico Nacional. Este Avivamiento comenzó el pasado 19 de junio en la Solemnidad del Corpus Christi y concluirá en Pentecostés de 2025. Durante este tiempo, nuestros obispos nos invitan a reflexionar más profundamente sobre el asombroso tesoro de la Sagrada Eucaristía, sobre este Don divino para nosotros. Nuestro mundo está herido. Todos necesitamos curación, pero muchos de nosotros estamos separados de la fuente misma de nuestra fuerza. El Misterio de la Sagrada Eucaristía es ciertamente asombroso. Como reflexionó Santo Tomás de Aquino, “El sacramento más noble, en consecuencia, es aquel en el que Su Cuerpo está realmente presente. La Eucaristía corona todos los demás sacramentos” (Disputas sobre la verdad, 27, 4.). Como subrayó Tomás, en la Eucaristía, nuestro Señor Jesús está verdaderamente presente entre nosotros, Cuerpo y Sangre, Alma y Divinidad. Esta convicción ha estado en el centro de nuestra identidad católica desde la Última Cena en adelante. En el siglo IV, San Cirilo de Alejandría reflexionó:

El pan y el vino de la Eucaristía antes de la invocación de la Santísima y adorable Trinidad eran simplemente pan y vino, mientras que después de la invocación el pan se convierte en el Cuerpo de Cristo, y el vino en la Sangre de Cristo. (Discursos Catequéticos, 19, 7)

Es tan fácil dar por sentado este Don de la Presencia Real de Cristo entre nosotros. Con los católicos de todo el país, oremos por una apreciación renovada de este tesoro. ¡Cuán bendecidos somos porque el amor de Cristo por nosotros es tan grande que nos da Su mismo Ser!

Jesús, que inauguró la Eucaristía en la Última Cena, que siempre atesoremos este Don de ti mismo. ¡Santa María, cuyo vientre fue el primer tabernáculo, ruega por una renovación de nuestra fe en el gran Sacrificio en el que la Sangre de tu Hijo fue derramada por nuestra redención!
